Govt allows import of green chilli

Daily Bangla Times: The government has accorded permission to import green chilli as the price of the daily essential commodity has been skyrocketed in the local market. The permission was accorded by the Ministry of Agriculture on Sunday, four days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina suggested people to preserve green chilli by drying it up.

On Sunday, 30 importing firms were accorded permission to import 11,600 tonnes of green chilli, the Ministry of Agriculture in a press release on Sunday. The ministry concerned accorded the permission in the wake of skyrocketing prices of the daily essential commodity.

At the same time, 68 firms were accorded permission to import 55,600 tonnes of tomato, the press release said. The green chilli prices have soared in the country's kitchen markets recently. Each kilogram of green chilli is now selling at Tk 280 to Tk 320 in the local markets. The green chilli was available at Tk 120 to Tk 130 per kg just a month ago.

On Sunday, each kilogram of ripened tomato was sold at Tk 110 to Tk 130 which was only Tk 50-70 a month ago.

Traders said the supply of green chilli has gone down across the country after rotten of chilli in the fields due to heavy rains.

On June 21 last, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told parliament that the price of green chillies increased during the monsoon. So people should preserve those by drying to use later on.
