144 BNP leaders expelled so far for contesting upazila polls


BD Online Desk: Opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party has expelled its 19 more grassroots leaders for contesting the ongoing upazila parishad polls, begun on March 10, defying the party’s decision.
 
The total number of expelled grassroots leaders for contesting the upazila polls rai-sed to 144 since the expulsion spree began on February 26.
 

BNP on Saturday expelled its 18 district and upazila level leaders of Chattogram, Pirojpur and Dinajpur for contesting the current local government polls defying the party’s decision, said a press release signed by its assistant office secretary Taiful Islam Tipu.

On Thursday, BNP expelled Munshiganj district unit Mahiladal general secretary Jahanara Begum for contesting the upazila parishad polls violating the party decision, according to a party’s press release. All of them were expelled from all posts of the party.
BNP boycotted the upazila parishad polls under the incumbent Election Commission and the government.

The fifth upazila parishad polls, begun on March 10, will be held in five phases. The second phase is scheduled for March 18, the third phase for March 24, the fourth phase for March 31 and the fifth phase for June 18.
