10-yrs’ jail for storing and selling adulterated medicines

Daily Bangla Times : The Cabinet has given final approval to the draft of “Drugs and Cosmetics Act-2023”, which provides 10 years’ imprisonment for storing and selling adulterated medicines.

The draft law was approved in the regular meeting of the Cabinet presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Prime Minister’s Office on Monday (February 6).

Later, Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain held a press briefing in the Cabinet meeting room to announce the decision of the meeting.

He said, “In the draft of the proposed law, in case of importation, production, storage, supply and sale of medicines and cosmetic products, violation of any section of this law has been mentioned as imprisonment and fine for various terms. The provision of 10 years’ jail has been kept in the law for storing and and manufacturing adulterated medicine.”

He further said, “Antibiotics cannot be sold without a prescription from a registered doctor. A penalty of Tk20,000 has been imposed if antibiotics are sold without a license from a shop.”
