MoUs to make Bangladesh dependent on India very soon: Mirza Fakhrul

The recent signing of memoranda of understanding (MoUs) will make Bangladesh dependent on India very soon, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Monday.

“The MoUs they [the government] have signed will clearly make Bangladesh dependent on India very soon. Among them, the most concerning is the rail corridor deal, which will not benefit Bangladesh at all,” he told reporters, responding to a question, after paying respects at the grave of former President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka.

Refuting the ruling party leaders’ allegations that the BNP is plotting over the MoUs with India and creating a provocative situation, he said, “What we have said is true. We are not making any plot.”

About entering into MoUs with India on partnership in air, land, and naval routes, he said, “We have no objection to partnership and connectivity. But what has Bangladesh gained from it? We got nothing. We didn't get our share of water, Teesta water. Border killings have not stopped.”

Earlier, Fakhru, along with leaders of the Jatiyatabadi Ainjibi Forum, paid tribute to Ziaur Rahman by placing floral wreaths at his grave. Forum President Zainul Abedin, Secretary General Kaisar Kamal, and President of the Supreme Court Lawyers’ Association Mahbub Uddin Khokon were also present.
