Students of 7 DU-affiliated colleges withdraw blockade

Students of seven colleges affiliated to Dhaka University (DU) on Sunday (August 27) evening withdrew their movement following the assurance of the authorities concerned after blockading Nilkhet intersection in the capital.

At about 6:45pm on Sunday, Dhaka College's English department's student Shahriar Mahmud Opu, also the coordinator of the movement, formally announced withdrawal of blockade. Then the students left Nilkhet intersection.

The withdrawal of blockade came following the assurance of the DU authorities who said that they would hold a meeting with the protesting students on Tuesday over the issue.

Prof ASM Maksud Kamal, pro-vice-chancellor (Academic), said that a meeting has been convened to talk to the students regarding their demands. "After discussing with them, we will make a decision."

Earlier, the students blockaded Nilkhet intersection  demanding that the DU authorities lower the minimum CGPA requirement for promotion to the next academic year.

They also protested "discrimination of DU authority" by staging a symbolic 'mass suicide' program. They staged the blockade at the intersection around 12.25pm bringing out a procession from TSC of Dhaka University to the Nilkhet intersection.

The students' blockade programme led to acute traffic congestion on Azimpur-Science Laboratory Road, mounting sufferings for commuters. Additional police forces were deployed to avert any untoward situation.

During the blockade, 13 students fell sick on the road. They were given treatment at the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Several of them were also admitted there.
