IU student dissatisfied over length of punishment of BCL leader

The victim, who was tortured by a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) activists, including the organization’s Islamic University (IU) unit vice-president Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora on the campus, has expressed her dissatisfaction over the punishment given against the accused by the university authorities.

The university authorities on Saturday expelled a leader and four activists of BCL for one year for torturing a first-year honours student of Finance and banking department. The decision was made at a meeting of the disciplinary committee held on the campus with vice-chancellor Shaikh Abdus Salam in the chair

The expelled students are BCL university unit vice-president Shanjida Chowdhury Ontora of Statistics department and her associates Tabassum Islam and Maobiya Jahan, of Finance and banking department, Halima Khatun Urmi of Fine arts department and Israt Jahan Mim of Law department.

The victim was demanding for life term expulsion of the accused since after the incident of the torture. Expressing frustration over today’s punishment announced by the university authorities, the victim said, “I think I could not be able to continue my study. I am sure that the expelled students would do something bad to me after the end of their punishment. I would be forced to leave this university.”

She further said, “This minimum punishment is not logical for what they have done to me. They got a little punishment. My demand was to expel them for life.”

The victim said, “It is normal that they will come back after a year and do harm to me. They will do it at any time. This administration would not able to do anything to protect this (revenge).”

She said, “The accused do not even admit that they beat me and did wrong thing. They write lies on social media at different times by putting the blame on me. I am very afraid of it. I want justice for what happened to me.”

The victim was tortured and humiliated by IU unit of BCL VP Sanjida Chowdhury Antara and her cohorts at Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall on the campus in Kushtia on February 12 last. The incident came to light after the victim left the hall and disclosed the matter to her seniors and her family members the next day.

On February 14, the victim lodged a written complaint with the university administration, including the university proctor, student adviser and hall provost, demanding punishment of those involved in the incident. Two probe bodies formed by the Islamic University authorities to look into the matter submitted their reports on February 26.

The Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall administration expelled the accused on February 27.On March 5, the university authorities expelled Ontora and four of her associates from the university as well as removed Shamsul Alam, the provost of Deshratna Sheikh Hasina Hall, from his post following the order of the High Court.

The university administration also allocated a seat to the female student of her choice in the Fazilatunnesa Mujib Hall following the court order.
