Prices of onions, potatoes rise


The prices of onions and potatoes witnessed a significant rise on the kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka in past one week while that of most other essential commodities maintained an upward trend.Traders said that the prices of onions and potatoes continued to rise on the wholesale market almost every day.

At the same time the prices of vegetables also increased on the kitchen markets due to a supply shortage as monsoon and flash flood damaged farmlands in many parts in the country, they said.

According to the retailers, the prices of eggs witnessed a sharp rise on the city markets after Eid-ul-Azha as big companies and wholesalers increased the prices of the item.

Eid-ul-Azha, one of the largest religious festivals of the Muslims, was celebrated in the country on June 17.They said that the prices of eggs decreased a little bit but still remained high.

The prices of onions increased by Tk 10-15 a kilogram in past one week and the local variety of the item sold for Tk 100-110 a kilogram on Friday on the city markets.

The prices of onions increased by Tk 20-25 a kilogram in past two weeks as the item was sold for Tk 85-90 a kilogram before Eid-ul-Azha.

The price of potatoes increased by Tk 5-10 a kilogram in past one week and the item sold for Tk 60-65 a kilogram. In some of the kitchen markets in the city, potatoes sold for up to Tk 70 a kilogram on Friday.   

The prices of rice, however, decreased by Tk 2-3 a kilogram over the week on the city’s kitchen markets.The lower-grade Miniket sold for Tk 65-72 a kilogram while its fine variety sold for Tk 75–80 a kilogram and Najirshail for Tk 75–85 a kilogram on Friday.

Coarse and medium-quality varieties of rice sold for Tk 52–58 a kilogram on the city markets.The price of eggs remained high over the week and the item sold for Tk 54-55 a hali (four pieces) on the city markets on Friday.

The prices of most of the vegetables remained high on the city’s kitchen markets over the week.Aubergine sold for Tk 60-100 a kilogram, bitter gourd for Tk 80-120 a kilogram, papaya for Tk 50-60 a kilogram, pea bean for Tk 80-100 a kilogram, pointed gourd for Tk 40-50 a kilogram, carrot for Tk 120-150 a kilogram, cucumber for Tk 70-100 a kilogram and tomato for Tk 130-170 a kilogram.

The prices of green chilli also remained high and the item sold for Tk 240-300 a kilogram on the city markets on Friday.
