Low-lying areas of Sylhet flooded due to heavy rain, onrush of water from India


  The low-lying areas of Sylhet have been flooded due to continuous rain and onrush of upstream water from the neighbouring India. Devotees faced immense sufferings on the day of Eid-ul-Azha due to inundation of roads and lanes. Many people who have become marooned have got into the shelter centres. Different tourism centres have gone under water.


Earlier on May 27, the water of all the rivers in Sylhet crossed the danger level, raising concerns of potential flooding in the district. Due to the influence of Cyclone Remal, Sylhet experienced heavy rainfall. Some 7,50,000 people in different upazilas of the district got marooned. Though the water is yet to be receded, flash flood situation has appeared on Monday. Movement of vehicles has remained suspended due to the inundation of many roads. People's sufferings have mounted due to continuous rainfall and flash flood on the Eid-day.


Visiting different places on Monday morning, it was found that most of the inhabitants of the district and city could not go to the Eidgah concerned to offer Eid prayers. They also faced great difficulties while sacrificing animals. People had to face such difficulties due to water in surrounding areas and torrential rains. Many were seen going to the shelter centre due as water entered their houses. 


Flood-like situation has created at the low-lying areas of Gowainghat, Companiganj, Jaintapur, Kanaighat, Balaganj, Osmani Nagar and Fenchuganj upazilas. In such a situation, the local administration has opened the shelter centres and started distributing dried food among the flood-affected people.


Jewel Ahmed, an inhabitant of village Mahishkher under Companiganj upazila, said, "Flood like situation has appeared again though two weeks are yet to be passed following the earlier flood. Water has increased this time compared to the previous time. Roads have been inundated. As a result, people cannot come out of their houses. Water is rising constantly. Devotees suffered while offering Eid prayer and slaughtering sacrificial animals."


Meanwhile, all the tourism centres including Jaflong have gone under water due to the onrush of upstream water. As a result, tourists cannot visit those places. Though the administration is yet to announce closure of the tourism centres, tourists have been asked to travel with caution.


Businessmen involved in tourism related businesses are facing major setback due to the flood-like situation during the Eid season. They took preparations accordingly as they can make business during the Eid season. But, they are facing great difficulties due to the emergence of a flood-like situation.
