China not to intervene in Bangladesh’s internal matters: envoy

The Chinese ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen on Wednesday said that China would not intervene in any internal issues of Bangladesh, including elections.

‘Our policy always remains the same. China never intervenes in other countries’ internal issues... Election is Bangladesh’s internal issue,’ he told reporters after a meeting with planning minister Abdul Mannan at the Planning Commission in Dhaka.

They discussed the country’s infrastructural development, trade and investments at the meeting.

Yao Wen said that China was a long-standing friend of Bangladesh and they were ready to extend support for development projects here for the benefit of the people.

The ambassador expressed China’s willingness to invest in the southern Khulna region, the Mongla port in particular, as the commissioning of the Padma Bridge opened up opportunities for development activities, Mannan said.

Bangladesh could take lessons from China considering its vast experience and expertise in infrastructure development. And they had working experience in Bangladesh, he added.

Mannan said, ‘China has implemented 28 five-year plans, and Bangladesh is implementing only its 8th five-year plan. So, they have a vast experience.’

The minister said that China was interested in investing in solar power and electric vehicle sectors in Bangladesh.

After the construction of the Padma Bridge, there was a wide scope of development in the country’s south-western region, he said, adding that the Chinese investors were interested in investing in the southern region.

Mannan said that he had told the Chinese envoy that Bangladesh was expecting more support from China being an important friend and development partner of the country.

He said that China was expected to be more liberal in trade and business and provide Bangladesh with more duty-free quota-free facilities.

The minister said that the Chinese ambassador told him that they never intervened in any internal matters of any country.
