Bangladesh sees highest death toll from dengue in a day


A total of six dengue patients died while 836 more patients were hospitalised across the country in the last 24 hours till Sunday morning. The number of fatalities and hospitalisation were single-day highest since January 1 of the year. With the death, the fatalities from this mosquito-borne disease rose to 73 in the country this year.


Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Malek, however, on Sunday said the dengue menace may increase in August-September this year. He urged everyone to clean their country yard regularly as accumulate water is the breeding ground of Aedes mosquitoes. He told this to newsmen at a views exchange meeting at his house in Garpara of Manikganj.


With the latest death, 26 patients died in the last nine days of July. Dhaka and Chattogram divisions have the highest number of dengue cases, said Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).The directorate in its regular update mentioned that of the new patients, 516 were admitted to hospitals in Dhaka and the rest outside it with the mosquito-borne disease.


A total of 2,750 dengue patients, including 1,968 in the capital, are now receiving treatment at hospitals across the country.So far, the DGHS has recorded 12,954 dengue cases, 10,131 recoveries this year.


The country recorded 281 dengue deaths in 2022, the highest on record after the 179 deaths recorded in 2019. Additionally, DGHS recorded 62,423 dengue cases and 61,971 recoveries last year, while the cases touched the 10,000-mark in September
