BD Correspondent: The attacks on opposition candidates and their supporters by ruling Awami League activists increased on Sunday and Monday as the general election is only 12 days away.
 

A Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal activist died falling from the roof of a five story building allegedly following chase by the police in Chattogram.

On Sunday and Monday, motorcades and campaigners of at least seven candidates of the opposition Jatiya Oikya Front and an independent candidate came under attack leaving about 200 people injured across the country.

On Sunday, front candidate in Satkhira 4 and local Jamaat leader Gazi Nazrul Islam and his three followers were arrested and sent to jail.
Angry over the attacks, front leaders during a meeting with the chief election commissioner and the other election commissioners on Monday demanded deployment of troops ‘right now’.
Later at a press briefing at Nirbachon Bhaban in the city, front leader Dr Kamal Hossain said they would under no circumstances boycott the election.
On Monday afternoon, election commissioner Mahabub Talukder told a news briefing at his office that he felt that no level playing field prevailed now.
Rights organisation Ain O Salish Kendra on Monday condemned the attacks on a ‘particular party’ candidates and supporters during electioneering and said the Election Commission’s role became questionable.
On Sunday and Monday, major incidents of attacks were reported from Norsingdi, Chattogram, Noakhali, Tangail, Bagerhat, Bhola, Chandpur, Natore, Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Rangamati and Jessore.
New Age correspondent in Jashore reported that Bagharpara residence of Engineer TS Ayub, BNP’s candidate in Jashore-4 was attacked with bombs early Monday but none was hurt in the attack, the candidate said at a press conference at Jashore Press Club Monday noon.
In Narsingdi, over 50 BNP leaders and activists were injured in attacks by activists of AL, Juba League and Chhatra League when BNP candidate for Narsingdi-2 Abdul Moyeen Khan was campaigning at Pachdona Bazar, Palash Sunday noon.
Witnesses said the ruling AL men carrying firearms, machetes and sticks swooped on the rivals around 12:30pm.
Moyeen Khan, a BNP standing committee member, however, escaped unhurt.
The attackers opened fire targeting the BNP campaigners and damaged their cars and left over 50 injured, said Moyeen Khan.
Of the injured, 10 were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and one was referred to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation in the capital as his condition was stated to be critical.
BNP candidate in Chattogram 10 Abdullah Al Noman and his followers while taking preparations to take out Victory Day procession came under attack from Juba League activists at Nayabazar, Halishahar in the port city Sunday afternoon and at least five BNP activists were injured.
Noman, vice-chairman of BNP, alleged Ershadul Amin, brother of AL candidate Afsarul Amin Chowdhury, led the attack in the presence of police.
Halishahar police officer-in-charge SM Obaidul Haque, however, claimed that no such incident took place.
In another incident, a Chhatra Dal activist Russell, 33, also follower of BNP candidate Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, died after falling from a five-story building at Muradnagar allegedly following chase by police early Sunday.
Khasru’s personal secretary Md Selim alleged that Russell and several other JCD activists went to ‘Murad Bhaban’ to spend the night and avoid arrest ahead of the election. ‘But police raided the place and chased them. Russell fell from the five-storey building and died,’ Selim said.
EPZ police OC Mir Nurul Huda rejected the claim and said they were informed about the death.
In Noakhali, the motorcade of BNP candidate for Noakhali-2, Zainal Abdin Farroque, and his followers came under attack at Senbagh at Sunday noon, leaving three including BNP leader and Senbagh upazila chairman Abul Kalam Azad injured.
Zainal alleged that a group of AL men attacked them and vandalized and torched the BNP office while they were taking the preparations to hold the Victory Day rally at Senbagh.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Mizanur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Senbagh police.
New Age Correspondent in Tangail reported that independent candidate for Tangail 4, Abdul Latif Siddique, also a former minister and expelled Awami League leader, began hunger strike in front of returning officer’s office in the district town since Sunday afternoon after his motorcade was attacked twice allegedly by AL men at Saratail and Ballavbari under Kalihati in Tangail.
The attack allegedly left at least 20 supporters of Latif injured and glasses of four cars vandalized.
Latif alleged that a group of followers of local AL candidate Hasan Imam Khan Sohel Hazari MP attacked them at Saratail in the morning while he was on way to Gohaliabari union parishad’s former chairman Mahir Uddin Talukder’s residence at Ballavbari.
He alleged that his motorcade was again attacked after meeting Mahir at Ballavbari and claimed that 20 of his activists were injured and four cars were vandalised.
Hasan Imam, however, denied the allegation.
Tangail returning officer Md Shahidul Islam said that he received the complaint and would take action.
In Bagerhat, BNP candidate for Bagerhat 1, Masud Rana, and 20 other activists of the party were injured in attacks on their motorcades by AL activists at two places in Bagerhat on Sunday.
Bagerhat BNP president and candidate for Bagerhat 2, MA Salam, alleged that nine BNP activists were injured and glasses of four cars were vandalized in an attack by AL activists at Harinkhana area of the district town on Sunday noon.
Masud Rana alleged that he himself and 11 BNP activists were injured when AL activists attacked them at Kodalia Bazaar under Mollahat upazila at about noon while he was in his election campaign.
In Bhola, over 50 people were injured in a clash between AL and BNP men in Borhanuddin upazila on Sunday.
Five election offices of Awami League and five microbuses were vandalized and 20 motorcycles torched during the clashes.
Witnesses said BNP leaders and activists gathered at Hakimuddin Launchgaht in the morning to receive BNP candidate for Bhola 2, Hafiz Ibrahim, who came to his area from Dhaka.
At one stage, they engaged in a clash with Awami League leaders and activists who were conducting electioneering in the area.
Five election offices of Awami League in Udaypur area and five microbuses were damaged while 20 bikes were set afire at that time.
On information, police rushed in and brought the situation under control.
In Chandpur, at least 20 people, including a police inspector, were injured in a clash between BNP and AL supporters at Puran Bazar Nitaiganj in the district town on Sunday while BNP candidate for Chandpur 3 and district BNP convener Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik along with his supporters was conducting campaign.
Locals said at one stage of Farid’s campaign at around 11:30am, AL and BNP men locked in clashes.
On information, police rushed to the spot and brought the situation under control, said Mohammad Nasim, officer-in-charge of Sadar Model Police Station.
New Age Correspondent in Sylhet, quoting Companiganj upazila BNP general secretary Ali Akbar, reported that a group of 10 masked people attacked and vandalized the car of BNP candidate for Sylhet 4 Dildar Hossain Selim at in Tila area of the upazila on Sunday 7:00pm but the candidate remained unhurt.
Companiganj OC Tazul Islam said that the police visited the spot after receiving information.
In Moulvibazar, at least five supporters of MM Shahin, Awami League-led alliance candidate from Bikalpa Dhaka Bangladesh for Moulvibazar 2 constituency, were injured in an attack at one of his election office at Kulaura in the district on Sunday night.
Badrul Islam Badar, a Kulaur upazila Juba League leader alleged that BNP and Jamaat men attacked them, but the district BNP vice-president Abed Raja rejected the allegation and said that it was a ‘planned drama’ to harass their party activists.
In Natore, two BNP activists were injured in an attack by AL men at Station Bazar area of the town on Sunday noon during election campaign, alleged BNP candidate Sabina Yasmin for Natore 2 in a press conference alleged.
In Bogura, the motorcade of Shariful Islam Jinnah, an Awami League-led ‘grand alliance’ candidate for Bogura 2, came under attack at Bhaier Pukur areas of Shibganj Monday evening.
Two campaigners of Jinnah, a leader of Jatiya Party, were injured during the attack in which miscreants hurled at least three crude bombs at the motorcade.
Injured campaigners Dulu and Alamgir were admitted to Shibganj Upazila Health Complex.
Jinnah claimed that activists of BNP were behind the attack.
Jinnah visited the area hearing that his posters were being torn and burnt by opponents.
In Rangamati, a number of BNP activists allegedly attacked AL leaders and activists at Bhedvedi of the district the Sunday evening, injuring four people, reports UNB.
At a press conference, female MP from reserved seat Feroza Begum Chinu alleged that BNP men swooped on the ruling party men around 6:30pm while they were electioneering.
Rumana Morshed Kanak Chapa, BNP candidate for Sirajganj 1 (Kazipur), on Monday said that she had left her constituency and took shelter at Bogura fearing for her life.
At a press conference held at Parjatan Motel in Bogura, she alleged that she was followed by a black car on December 16 on her way to Kazipur.
She also alleged that Awami League activists had been threatening the owner of the house where she was residing for running electioneering.
In Brahmanbaria, AL activists set fire and vandalised an office of BNP candidate Engineer Khaleque Hossain Mahmud Shyamal for Brahmanbaria 3 early Sunday, said Jahirul Islam, BNP district general secretary, in a press conference on Sunday.
In Thakurgaon, at least four BNP activists were injured in a reported clash with AL activists in Madarganj area of sadar upazila centering tearing up of BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s posters, UNB reported.
Being informed about a clash, a police team went to the spot, said Mostafizur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Sadar police.
New Age Correspondent in Satkhira reported that JOF candidate for Satkhira 4 and former Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam and his three supporters from his village home at Ismailpur under Shyamnagar upazila in Satkhira Sunday afternoon.
The three other arrestees include Shyamnagar upazila parishad chairman Abdul Bari.
Shyamnagar police station officer-in-charge Abul Kalam said they, on information that Nazrul was holding a meeting with Jamaat men, raided his house and arrested the four including Nazrul and Bari.
Both Nazrul and Bari were in wanted in several cases of committing sabotages, said police.
