The United States has supported the European Union expressing concerns over the arrest of opposition activists in Bangladesh. ‘We agree,’ the US embassy in Dhaka tweeted on Monday morning, reposting the statement of high representative of the EU for foreign affairs and security policy and vice-president of the EU commission Josep Borrell Fontelles.
Urging all parties to refrain from violence, the EU high representative said in a statement on social media platform X, formerly twitter, that justice must be served in all cases.‘Concerned by the arrest of over 8,000 opposition activists in Bangladesh. Justice must be served in all cases. We encourage all parties to refrain from violence,’ Josep Borrell said in the statement on Sunday night.
In his post, he wrote that it was vital to find a peaceful way to participatory elections, conducive to democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms.
The EU high representative made the statement in the wake of the ongoing countrywide crackdown mostly on the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders and activists across the country, following clashes over the BNP’s grand rally in Dhaka on October 28 pressing for the Awami League government’s resignation and holding the next general election under a non-party caretaker administration.
Later in the afternoon, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader told reporters in the Dhaka city that the EU statement over the crackdown on the leaders and activists of opposition political parties, including BNP had information gap.
‘We do not want to condemn their statement as the EU is a group of 27 friends of Bangladesh. There is an information gap. We urge them to give statements after crosschecking data and facts,’ said Quader, while speaking at an event at the AL Dhaka district unit office.
