Commenting that the BNP has been doing peaceful movement, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said, "We've doing peaceful struggle and we'll continue to do so in the days ahead. We'll continue to protest peacefully. We hope that a good sense will prevail on Sheikh Hasina. Country's people know how to realise their demands."
Mirza Fakhrul also issued an ultimatum to the government to release BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia within the next 48 hours. "The government must release Deshnetri Khaleda Zia within the next 48 hours."
The BNP Secretary General issued the ultimatum while speaking as the chief guset at a rally organised at the party's Nayapaltan central office premises on Sunday afternoon to press home the demand of releasing ailing Khaleda Zia and sending her abroad for better medical treatment.
Mirza Fakhrul said, "Release Khaleda Zia as early as possible. She is very sick. Physicians said her condition is not good. She has no treatment left in the country. It will become very difficult to save her unless she is not sent abroad for better treatment."
Referring to the US visa policy and sanctions imposed on individuals in Bangladesh, Fakhrul said, "Not only the United States, but also the country's people have imposed sanctions upon you. BNP will not take part in the next general election unless it is held under a caretaker government."
On the cancellation of caretaker government provision, Fakhrul said, "Awami League revoked the caretaker government provision in the constitution when they found that they would not be able to win an election under the caretaker government."
Awami League enforced a 176-day hartal demanding the caretaker government and Khaleda Zia introduced the caretaker system after changing the constitution for the sake of democracy, he added.
Mentioning about Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her daughter's selfies with US President Joe Biden, the BNP Secretary General said, "The Prime Minister was smiling too much taking selfies with President Biden. She (Sheikh Hasina) said she would never go to the United States anymore, though the US has imposed visa policy on Bangladesh when the prime minister is right in the US. The US visa policy is very humiliating for an independent and sovereign nation. Unfortunately, people are witnessing it keeping you in power."
Pointing to the role of some police officials, Mirza Fakhrul said they have resorted to repression and torture to keep an illegal government in power. "Some over-enthusiastic police officials have again stood against people. But, you should not take stand in favour of any anti-people government to bring it to power again. The country's people have risen again."
The rally was also addressed by BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas
