He told reporters at his office that he needed to clear his position as his speech at a thanks-giving ceremony at the commission on January 3 caused confusion and several reporters had asked him if he changed his stance.
At the thanks-giving ceremony hosted by the commission secretariat, Mahbub called chief election commissioner Nurul Huda a warrior for holding the elections ‘successfully.’
In written statement on Tuesday, he said that he had told the thanks-giving ceremony, ‘We succeeded in holding an overall participatory election.’
The statement read, ‘On December 17, 2018, I said, “A participatory election means participation of all political parties in it. It has no relation to a free and fair election. A participatory election is a primary gain. The main issue is whether the election is acceptable and credible. An election cannot have any positive outcome if it is not acceptable and credible.’
Mahbub mentioned that at the programme he said nothing about the acceptability and credibility of the elections.
‘Replying to reporters’ query how the elections were, I had said, “Ask your conscience you will get the answer.” Still I say the same. There is no change in my stance,’ he stated.
Mahbub Talukdar came into limelight for his dissent from decisions of his four other colleagues.
Before the elections, Mahbub hogged headlines following his dissenting opinions.
On December 19, Mahbub Talukdar said that Nurul Huda hurt the existence of an election commissioner by accusing him of lying for saying that there was hardly any level playing field in the elections.
The statement had read, ‘Replying to journalists’ queries on December 17, I said that the journalists would get the answer if they asked their conscience if there was any level playing field in the elections. Still I request all concerned to judge on their own and ask their conscience if there is any level playing field.’
