BD Correspondent: Jatiya Oikya Front top leader Dr Kamal Hossain on Friday sought ‘positive action’ from India as he said the government was going to turn the forthcoming elections into a farce.

Speaking at a news conference at the alliance office at Paltan, he said, ‘I will ask the people of Delhi to look into the situation in Bangladesh.’

Kamal Hossain said the front will hold a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on December 27, three days before the elections.

He also complained that the government resorted to repressing opposition candidates and their supporters fearing defeat in the elections.

‘I expect positive action from India,’ he said, remembering the India’s support for the people of Bangladesh in 1971.
‘We are not participating in the elections to give the government a free hand to enjoy power as they did in last five years,’ Kamal said adding that the United Nation’s Human Rights Commission’s Thursday’s statement echoed his voice.

The UN Human Rights Commission’s special rapporteurs on Thursday called for ‘urgent action’ saying that UN human rights experts were ‘alarmed’ by violence ahead of election.
‘UN experts have expressed alarm about political violence, restrictions on freedom of expression and the rise of religious fundamentalism in Bangladesh ahead of general elections on 30 December,’ said a release of the office of UN Human Rights High Commissioner.

Kamal Hossain made the call to India for its support on the backs of his series of allegations of attacks, obstructions and intimidation on opposition candidates and their supporters by the ‘ruling Awami League and police’.
‘This is unprecedented…I’ve never seen such situation in my 50 years of political career,’ he said.

He also asked the government to keep patience.
‘Come to your sense. Be cool down. You need to win election but not this way,’ Kamal told the government.
‘I urge. I demand. I expect you will let the election to be held and not make the election a farce,’ Kamal said.
The front announced processions in Dhaka 4 to Dhaka 18 constituencies every day at 2:00pm from December 21 to December 24.

JOF also reiterated its demand that the Election Commission should reschedule the election in the seats where its candidates were disqualified by the court.
As many as 15 Jatiya Oikya Front candidates have got their election bid curbed by the High Court on various grounds.
