BD Special Correspondent: Ambassadors of ten European countries called upon the Bangladesh government and the Election Commission and all other stakeholders on Monday to ensure a genuine, credible, inclusive and transparent process for the 11 parliamentary polls.

In a joint statement on the election situation, they urged all stakeholders to uphold and protect the citizens’ rights to universal suffrage, freedom of expression and right to peaceful assembly. They welcome the commitments made by the Bangladesh Election Commission and the Government of Bangladesh in this respect.

The mission chiefs urged all political parties to meet their democratic responsibilities and to refrain from violence.
They also called upon the law enforcement agencies to strictly adhere to the rule of law.

Media and civil society scrutiny ‘is particularly important in ensuring transparency throughout this process’, they said.
Rensje Teerink, ambassador of the Delegation of the European Union, British high commissioner Alison Blake, Spanish ambassador Álvaro de Salas Giménez de Azcárate, Swedish ambassador Charlotta Schlyter, French ambassador Marie-Annick Bourdin, German ambassador Peter Fahrenholtz, Dutch ambassador Harry Verweij, Danish ambassador Winnie Estrup Petersen, Norwegian Sidsel Bleken and Swiss ambassador René Holenstein made the statement issued by the EU delegation in Dhaka.

Participatory elections ‘constitute an important step in the ongoing process of national development’ for all Bangladeshi citizens, they added.
