The line calling Janaki "India's daughter" was also critiqued by the mayors of Kathmandu and Pokhara. Nepalese Hindus, consisting of a large chunk of the population, believe that Sita was born in Janakpur, a city about 220 km away from capital Kathmandu.

In the film, inspired by the Ramayana, the main characters are called Raghav, Lankesh and Janaki.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, June 18, Balendra Shah, mayor of Kathmandu asked all theatres in the city to stop screening all Indian films. "No Indian film will be allowed to be screened in the Kathmandu municipality area until this objectionable part is removed from the film," Mr Shah wrote.

Manoj Muntashir Shukla, Adipurush co-writer said that some dialogues would be re-written and changed in the movie taking the “hurt” sentiments into consideration. "I wrote more than 4,000 lines of dialogue for Adipurush, but some sentiments were hurt by five lines," he said.

Adipurush starring Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and Saif Ali Khan, has also been criticised for its visual effects, alongside the dialogues deemed to trivialise the characters of the much-revered epic.
