17 dead, scores injured in polls violence

17 dead, scores injured in polls violence


BD Correspondent: At least 17 people were killed and scores injured in clashes in at least 14 districts during the 11th national elections in Bangladesh on Sunday.

Of the deaths, two each were reported from Chattogram, Rajshshi and Cumilla while one each in Lakshmipur, Rangamati, Cox’s Bazar, Bogura, Brahmanbaria, Noakhali, Narsingdi, Dinajpur, Jashore, Dinajpur and Sylhet.
Assistant inspector general of police (media) at police headquarters in Dhaka, Sohel Rana, said of the 17 dead, seven were of Awami League, five were of Bangladesh Nationalist Party, one of Jatiya Party, besides one hawker and three others with no political affiliation.
Kamal Hossain, top leader of opposition Jatiya Oikya Front, of which BNP is a major component, said numerous incidents of casualties took place in election violence across the country and already 21 people were killed.

There is fear that the number dead would increase, Kamal said, adding that hundreds of candidates, leaders and activists of the front were under treatment at hospital and are in critical condition.
In Chattogram, a college student, Abu Sadek, 18, of Maliara under Potiya upazila who was a voter for the first time, died as he received a bullet when caught in a tripartite clash between Awami League, BNP and supporters of ‘candle’ symbol at South Maliara Govt Primary School centre of Patiya upazila, said additional Superintendent of Police Afruzul Haque Tutul.
Sadek’s family members claimed that their family support BNP.
Besides, local Jatiya Party leader Ahmed Kabir, 55, was killed and five cops injured in a clash between Jatiya Party activists and police at Baskhali upazila in Chattogram early Sunday, said Baskhali polices station officer-in-charge Kamal Hossain.

Our Correspondent in Jashore reported that BNP agent aspirant Shamsur Rahman Mollah, 75, was killed and 20 others including journalist Firoj Gazi of Daily Kaler Kantha were injured while AL man swooped on BNP activists near Pathalia Madrasah Centre at about 7:30am on Sunday.
Abhaynagar police officer-in-charge Alamgir Hossain said Firoj was attacked by his political rivals while he was on his way to the election centre to be an election agent of BNP candidate for Jashore 4.
Besides, BNP candidate for Jashore 3 was attacked in the district town by AL activists twice — around 10:30am and 12:20pm.
Our Correspondent in Brahmanbaria, quoting police and locals, reported that a 21-year-old mason Israil of Rajghar under Sadar upazila was killed by a bullet and at least 25 others were injured when police charged baton and opened fire to control the crowed when a clash broke out between activists of AL and BNP at Rajghar Government Primary School polling centre in the morning.
Besides, the house of Jatiya Oikya Front candidate Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamol at Puniaut of the district was attacked and torched allegedly by Bangladesh Chhatra League activists, locals said.
Our correspondent in Rangamati reported that local Juba League leader Bashir uddin, 35, was killed and 10 were injured in a clash with BNP-Jamaat supporters at Rangipara village under Kawkhali upazila in Rangamati at 6.00am while several shots were fired, said Rangamati deputy commissioner AKM Mamunur

Our Correspondent in Cox’s Bazar reported that BCL activist, Abdullah Faruk, 23, was killed and 33 others injured in a clash between AL and BNP at Matborpara election center under Pekoua upazila of Cox’s Bazar 1 constituency.
In Dinajpur, a voter, Kina Mohammad, 65, of Uttar Lakshmipur village under Birol died while he fell on the ground during a clash between AL and BNP activists on way to his home from polling centre around 12:00pm on Sunday.
Our Correspondent in Cumilla reported that an activist of Liberal Democratic Party Mujibur Rahman, 35, of Pashchim Belashwar under Chandina was shot to death allegedly by police at Paschim Belashwar Government Primary School centre.
His relatives alleged that police opened fire without any provocation as they saw less voters of ruling party in the centre while Chandina officer-in-charge claimed that police opened fire in self defence when BNP and LDP activists attacked police to snatch ballot boxes.
Besides, a BNP activist Bachchu Mia, 48, of Murgaon under Nangalcoat upazila was beaten to death allegedly by ruling AL activists on his way to the polling centre at Murgaon Government Primary School on Sunday, said Nangalcoat police station OC Nazrul Islam.
Our Correspondent in Narsingdi reported that an AL polling agent Md Milon, 26, of village Kundarpara under Shibpur was hacked to death allegedly by supporters of AL rebel candidate Sirajul Islam Millat MP in Kunderpara Government Primary School of Narsingdi 3 around 12:30pm, said OC Abul Kalam Azad.
Our Correspondent in Gazipur reported that an AL activist Liakat Ali, 44, was killed and two others injured as a group of 50 or 60 youths attacked and hacked them at Harinal High School voting centre of Gazipur 2 under Sadar upazila in the district, said Gazipur Sadar Police Station OC Samir Chandra Sutradhar.
Our RU correspondent in Rajshshi, quoting police, reported that Merajul Islam, 30, son of late Abdus Sattar of Paikpara village under Mohonpur upazila and Mosadder Ali, 40, son of Mohammad Ali of Mohammadpur village under Tanore upazila, were killed in separate election violence between AL and BNP at Mohammadpur High School polling centre under Taonore upazila and at Pakuria Government High School centre under Mohonpur upazila respectively.
In Sylhet, Balaganj upazila unit JCD general secretary Sayem Ahmad Sohel was gunned down by police at Azizpur Government Primary School centre in Gauripur of Balaganj at around 2:30pm.
Balaganj police OC Ataur Rahman said police had opened fire on Sayem when he was fleeing along with a ballot box around 2:30pm.
In Bogura, an AL activist Azizul Islam, 30, died and union council member Nazmul Huda Duel was injured in an attack at Bagail village of Kahalu upazila on Sunday noon in an attack allegedly by BNP activists, said Kahalu police station OC Shawkat kabir.
Our Correspondent in Noakhali, quoting district superintendent of police Ilias Sharif, reported that an on-duty Ansar personnel, Nur Nabi, was killed and 20 others injured when supporters of BNP and Jamaat allegedly attacked him at Tularam Government Primary School under Begumganj upazila.
In Lakshmipur, an unidentified man, 35, was found dead and three others injured at about 12:30am at Baralia under Sadar upazila on Sunday immediately after a clash between local AL and BNP supporters over the ongoing election, said Duttabari union Parishad chairman Ahsanul Kabir Ripon.
Chandraganj police OC Abul Kalam Azad said they were investigating into the matter.
